Basic Commuter

We build Basic Commuters using a fundamental configuration that aligns well with riding conditions in flat, urban areas. Then we consider your seat, handlebar and stem preferences to get the best fit. Some riders like a lower profile, others want a more upright and comfortable position. Finally we add the ‘extras’ like racks, fenders, lights and bells.
We want to discuss the bike that you want. Then we want to build it.

Built in Evanston

We enjoy building bikes and take pride in bringing together an excellent collection of parts to create a simple, high-quality commuting bike. The secret formula comes from years of daily rides to the local Metra train.

Customizable

Do you want a flat bar, a premium seat, a rack setup designed for bags? We recognize how important it is to customize any bike to get the best function and fit. We want to discuss the bike that you want. Then we want to build it.

No Quick Release

If it’s easy to remove your wheels and your seat, sadly it also means that your bike is vulnerable to theft. We find that once you get your seat just right, you never want to adjust it, so why not bolt it down.

Cantilever Brakes

This brake style offers great control, excellent clearance for fenders and tires, have super thick pads, are simpler to maintain and don’t get clogged by leaf slop and snow. They can also handle extra weight for when you load up with a couple bags and a watermelon.

Weather Resistant

Fenders are essential if your goal is to ride every day in street clothes. I also leave my bike outside all day. It gets wet and collects snow. I prefer to wipe the seat and go. We select stainless steel and forged aluminum components because they are light, long-lasting, and rust-free.

Two Automatic Speeds

With many stop signs and very flat terrain, two speeds are ideal: high and low. We use an internally geared, automatic 2-speed hub built by SRAM, and this means no shifters, cables, rusty gears, maintenance and extra weight.

Rubber & The Road

We build wheels in house to achieve a perfection that you’ll feel on the road. We have a few ideas for what makes a great commuter wheel, beginning with a solid, large diameter rim that is double-walled with eyelets for spokes. Large wheels roll over cracks and narrow ones make pedaling easier. Puncture resistant tires protect you from glass and street debris while a bonus reflective strip adds nighttime visibility.

This edition features a 2 speed internal gear hub, a Brooks all weather Cambium saddle, and narrow ‘porter’ handlebar.
